Equisorb® was introduced into the United Kingdom by Belvoir Horse Products Ltd in 2001, following the demise of flax production in this Country. Previously flax production had been produced from four separate plants throughout the U.K. and had proved very popular. It was only due to changes of the subsidy to grow flax being made within the EEC that growers stopped growing flax and the only quality material available came from the Continent. Equisorb® today is manufactured to exacting specifications in two factories; one in France and one in Belgium. Both are only one and half hours from Calais making journey time short and predictable when coming to England. The reason Equisorb® has proven so popular in Europe as well as in British equestrian yards is due to its exceptional absorbancy and its consistently low level of dust. The fact that it comes from a natural vegetable crop, thereby making it highly biodegradable, is an added bonus. This high level of biodegradeability has been the underlying motive leading to a scheme for recycling the spent Equisorb® and turning it into Compost with a commercial value. Albeit the first scheme was not viable, valuable lessons were learnt and progress is being made towards re-introducing the scheme.
